THE MODERN MAID.

MILADY’S MAKE-UP. A Sarcastic Critic. Thus “ The Chiel ” looses some penetrating shafts of satire in the Ngaruawahia Advocate:— Blooming- cheeks are nowadays so much the production of art, that little reward could be expected from praising them. The same thing applies to ruby lips. It must be the deuce of a job to write a love poem ttf a modern girl. Let’s give it go:— S TO DELIA. Oh, Delia! your many charms 0 My fervent love hath captured, I am, whilst gazing on your form, With joy enraptured. I dote upon your lovely face, It’s varied charms of pink and white. It stirs my inmost heart to see So fair a sight. The vivid damask of your cheeks Invites my fervent kisses; The glowing ruby of your lips A call to bliss is. The pale ivory of your brow Draw's me to you like a magnet, The pool of shade beneath your eyes Is just a drag net. . I long to rough your shortened hair With loving, fond cai-esses, I Since now no fingers may entwine, As you’ve no tresses. Round your slim waist to slip my arm Would be to me a rapture, And in your glowing- eyes the gleam Of love to capture. But I must check my burning wish, Must still my throbbing heart; These things to do -would sure destroy Great works of Art. To kiss those ruby lips of thine, My longing lips must shirk, For so to do would leave undone The lip-stick'’s work. Raining kisses on your iheek, I am compelled to cry-off; For such a shower of love would I surely Take the dye off. Oh, Delia! My dearest dear! Be sure I love you still, Although I only stand aloof, And 'gaze my fill.
