PUTARURU V. ARAPUNI. In perfect weather, on a good batting pitch, Arapuni defeated Putaruru by 68 nms. Owing to the big- scores by both sides only one innings each was played' and stumps were drawn at 5.30 p.m. Putaruru as usual had great difficulty in completing- their team and played till after lunch with only nine men. Throughout the game only ten men were fielded, so that the showing of the visitors was not at all bad under the circumstances. Putaruru batted first and scoring was somewhat slow for the start, only 40 runs being put on in the first hour. Afterwards the scoring rate increased, and, five batsmen getting double figures, the respectable total of 109 was put on. j For Arapuni Burroughs opened and I kept a very good length, while * George, with slow breaks, also did -well, though one over cost him- 18 runs, including two sixes. Pettit, though not keeping quite as good a length as the other two, finished with the good average of 3 for 16. Putaruru batted one man shoft. After lunch Arapuni opened with Grainger and McDonald, and' the former placed the first ball of the innings for four. Quickly getting his eye in, Grainger gave a delightful exhibition, hitting all round' the wicket, though his off strokes were the best, a square cut being very forceful and nicely executed. Only two other Ara- ■ puni batsmen secured double figures and “ Mr. Extras ” wit li 12 was sec- i ond highest scorer. Grainger carried his bat right through the innings for 123, and, though receiving two or three lives, he gave a delightful exhibition, and is without a doubt incomparably the best batsman in the competition. His success was a very popular one as this -was the first time that he had knocked up a score in the local competition, his other big scores being in outside matches against Matamata (135 not out) and Rotorua (77). A noticeable, feature of Grainger’s batting, and one to be copied by younger players, is the power put behind his strokes. Never throughout his hatting does the ball meet the bat ; it is attack the whole time with the bat meeting "the ball to some purpose. Grainger’s score was made up of 10 4’s, 3 3’s and 25 2’s, the balance being singles. Two or three sixes were missed by inches. Altogether the game was, in tile words of one of the Arapuni team, “ one of the most enjoyable of the season.” Details of the scores are as follow : PUTARURU. COMPETITION POINTS.
The following are the points scored by the various teams in the above competition up to date :
A great deal of interest was taken in this match, which was played at Mangatapu, as the result of the
championship was at stake. If Waotu had won, the championship would have almost certainly been theirs, but Selwyn, who were second in the running, and have now got a very solid team together, overwhelmed their opponents and finally won by an innings and one run. In the first innings Waotu notched 73, of which Pearce 31 and G. Hanson 15 contributed the most. Things looked a little black for Selwyn when Craig and Campbell, two of their best batsmen, were disposed of for 3. Then Hollard and Macown made a determined stand, taking no risks with the bowling, which was very deadly, and brought the score up to 30 before Macown was dismissed lbw to Thorpe. Then Saies came in and he also assisted Hollard in a determined defence against good bowling, with the result that when Saies was dismissed for 12 Selwyn had reached Waotu’s score with four wickets down. E. W. G. Thorpe then joined Hollardi and runs began to come freely, as the bowlers were now beginning- to tire, and when Hollard was dismissed lbw after a well-earned 51 the score was 5 for 87. Knap rattled up 17 in quick time and when he was dismissed the score Was 6 for 105. Later on Thorpe and J. Stephenson were responsible for a fine last-wicket stand of 26, the innings closing for 156 with Thorpe 43 not out. The visitors were hospitably entertained by the local team and also by the Mangatapu ladies at afternoon tea. Details of the scores are appended : WAOTU. First Innings.
