PETROL TAX.

COUNTY COUNCIL’S MOVE. Matamata and Tauranga In Favour. The Tauranga County Council, in a letter to the Matamata County Council, sought the assistance of the council in urging the institution of a petrol tax so as ’to raise sufficient funds to pay the whole cost of maintenance of main highways, suitable exemptions to be made for dairying and other industries.

Cr. E. J. Darby supported the proposal. tCr. S. H. Judd (representative on the district council of the Highways Board) was also in favour. He suggested that the tax could be collected by the retailers, and an allowance be made on a rough estimate for benzine used for agricultural and industrial engines. Few people would run the risk of attempting to avoid the tax for the sake of a few shillings.

•Cr. W. H. Allen recalled that the Matamata County Council had passed a resolution a year ago in favour of a petrol tax. The council adhered to its former resolution, and supported the Tauranga proposal.
