PRECIOUS PLATINUM.
MORE VALUABLE THAT GOLD. ■Gold has hitherto been regarded as the most precious metal, but for gold one must now write platinum, for whereas gold can be bought at something under £4 10s an ounce, platinum is saleable, even to the dealer in precious metals, at £24 10s an ounce! New platinum fields in the Northern Transvaal have just been discovered, and this is the first time platinum has been found within the British Empire in any considerable quantity The biggest producer of this mos* precious of all metals is Columbia, in South America, which in 1923 turned out 42,000 ounces; whilst Russia, which probably has the greatest potentialities for producing platinum, supplied in the same year 32,000 ounces. Such figures illustrate the com^ara-; tive rarity of platinum, in comparison with gold, the world-production bf which runs every year into millions of ounces. The world’s consumption of platinum last year was 60,000 ounces.
