JERSEY BREEDERS.
MATAMATA CLUB. New Lease of Life. A few Jersey enthusiasts took the initial steps to give the old Matamata Jersey Breeders’ Association a new lease of life at the meeting on Saturday. There were present: Messrs. J. F. Vosper (president), and M. Shaw (Matamata), R. K. Garland and A. E. Brooks (Okauia), H. Lewis (Waharoa) and S. Mears (Walton), and the secretary, Mr. T. M. McCormack. The president said he was sorry that there was such a small attendance. He expected to see more breeders present. However,, he believed the club could be made successful in the future. Mr. Shaw did not think the meeting could transact business, as there were no officers appointed. Mr. Brooks agreed with Mr. Shaw’s view. There was now no club, and the requirements of the Jersey Breeders’ Association were not as yet complied with; members of the executive of the club being required to be members of the Association. The president said he thought the meeting should be taken as the annual one, and new officers appointed. He would resign his office as president and would nominate Mr. Shaw for the position. New men created new interests and brought in new members.
Mr. Shaw hoped that Mr. Vosper would reconsider the matter, for he had been the father of the movement in the district. The speaker felt that many more members might be secured. Lectures could probably be arranged for by officers of the Department of Agriculture, Dairy Division. Increase of membership would result in a better financial position and enable the club to do much good work. One thing that was wanted was a veterinary surgeon. It was remarkable that Matamata, which was one of the largest and finest dairying districts in New Zealand, had no veterinarian.
Other speakers endorsed Mr. Shaw’s remarks, and endeavoured to induce Mr. Vosper to remain president. Mr. Vosper said he fully appreciated the kind things said by Mr. Shaw and Mr. Lewis, but again appealed to Mr. Shaw to take the position. Mr. Mears’ view was that the club was not worth while unless new members were secured.
The secretary said the question of winding-up or continuing had been discussed three or four time previously, and the subject did not attract the new members. Mr. Mears then seconded Mr. Vosper’s motion that Mr. Shaw be president.
Mr. Shaw insisted that Mr. Vosper, being in the centre, should he president, as he came into contact with all the breeders. Mr. Garland favoured a canvass for members. Like Mr. Shaw, he believed many members could be secured. Finally, Mr. Shaw was elected president, and expressed the desire that Mr. Vosper should accept the position of vice-president. Mr. H. Lewis was appointed secretary. Committee: Messrs. Hears, Garland, Brookes and McCormack were appointed as an executive committee, with the officers as members ex-officio. SHOW PRIZES. The meeting approved of the prizegiving at the shows for Jersey cattle at all shows.. It was hoped that the local club would take action in connection with the Matamata show. Mr. P. Catchpole was appointed auditor. Mr. Garland again stressed the need of systematic canvassing being done. Each member should have a pocketbook and jot down names of prospective members, so that those persons could be approached when opportunities offered. Mr. Vosper said that misunder-
standing sometimes arose because people were under the impression that they need only pay subscription to the local club. It was necessary for those who belonged to it to pay subscription to the Association as well. The local club was more for local affairs, and to send remits and representatives to the parent body. VETERINARIAN. The president asked for expressions of opinion in regard to his suggestion that a veterinary club should be formed. He felt quite certain that the movement would prove a success. The matter was left in abeyance. Appreciation was expressed in regard to the work of the past secretary. Mr. McCormack said that there was only a small deficit. It was decided to wipe off all old accounts for subscriptions not paid in the past, and to make a new start altogether. A hearty vote of thanks to the past president (Mr. Vosper) and to the present president and secretary concluded thfe meeting.
