GOOD SALE AT TIRAU. Mr. A. J. Mouldey’s Herd. All Pedigree Stock. The fact that the wise dairy farmer of the Thames Valley and Waikato is no longer content to endeavour to do his business with the ordinary grade cow and the “ scrubber ” bull received a striking demonstration at Tirau on Monday at the clearing sale of pedigree Jersey stock conducted for Mr. A. J. Mouldey by the Farmers’ Co-operative Auctioneering Company, Ltd. Buyers from throughout the Upper Thames Valley were present in large numbers and the Waikato was also represented. Although the most fashionable (the highest-priced) cows went out of the immediate district it is pleasing to be able to record that the young stock was mostly purchased by farmers within the territory extending from Tirau to Waitoa. In the foreword of the catalogue it was shown that there was probably no Jersey herd in the province which carried such a strong infusion of the famous K.C.B. blood as that which was disposed of on Monday. Other notable producing families represented well in the herd were those of Campanile Sultan, Occulist and Primrose. The butterfat records given showed that Mr. Mouldey’s animals were worthy descendants of these families and that being so it must mean that the dairying stock of the district must be greatly improved by the distribution of Mr. Mouldey’s herd.
Prices for some of the animals, especially the calves, may be by some considered high but it has to be admitted that a good beast is worth a good price; in fact it is doubtful if the prices satisfied the vendor, although they were certainly high on the average for the district. The highest - priced animal was Jenny’s Lass, a six-year-old cow by Prince Enid—Jenny’s Campanile. The dam was a full sister to Exile of Oaklands, who was the sire of Pretty’s Flirt (10101 b fat). Jenny’s Lass put up 6001 b fat in a short season, practically grass fed. She was purchased by Mr. F. Smith, of Monavale, on Monday for 3 52gns. The next on the list of the high-priced animals was the cow Verbena’s Belle (purchased by Mr. Smith at ISOgns), by Great Scot—Verbena of Meadowbrook. Great Scot was by K.C.M.G., while Verbena of Meadowbrook was by Silver King (imp.), sire of five C.O.R. daughters averaging 4601 b fat. The next highest bidder for both these cows was Mr. R. Tuck, of Waharoa, who ultimately purchased the third-highest-priced animal, Jenny’s Queen, a half sister to Jenny’s Lass (152gns), at 77g-ns. The top-priced bull was one of the herd sires, Oakland’s Paddy Mahone (72gns), which will go to Mr. H. Walters’ (son of Mr. F. W. Walters) farm at Waitoa. Cows and heifers, including yearlings, to the number of 34, averaged just over 451gns. Nine bulls, also including- yearlings, averaged about while 15 of this season’s calves brought an average of over 18gns per head.
o The whole of the 58 cattle disposed of averaged about 36Tgns per head. The particulars of the sale and the individual animals are as follow, with the year of birth in parentheses:— COWS AND HEIFERS.
