LOCAL RAILWAY QUESTION.
THE ENGINEERING REPORT Points It Is to Cover. The report being prepared by Messrs. Vickermann and Lancaster, consulting engineers, under instructions from the Putaruru-Taupo Railway Board, is to deal not only with the matter of grades and curves respectively on the board’s proposed new railway and the Taupo Totara limber Company’s line as a whole but is to comply as far as possible with the following instructions:— “I* Set out cost of purchasingpresent line and cost to maintain it and operate it per annum or over a period of 25 years. “2. Show what it will cost to build a new line and to maintain and operate same over an equal period. “3. Indicate how each of the lines would serve the various areas to be served. “4. Indicate the travelling time necessary for trains on each of the proposals. “5. Deal with the question of the amount of benefit to be received by the customers of the railway.” These points are specified by Mr. .F. W. Furkert, engineer-in-chief of the Public Works Department, who asked for the report on behalf of the special committee set up to decide the question whether the board’s proposal or the T.T.T. line represents the better proposition for the railway district. INSPECTION STARTS MONDAY. The engineering inspection on behalf of Messrs. Vickermann and Lancaster is to commence next Monday, starting at the Mokai end.
