A copy of the Dairy Farmer’s Herd Register, which has recently been compiled by Mr. C. M. Hume, manager of the New Zealand Co-operative Herd-testing Association, Hamilton, is to hand. This publication fills a longfelt want and there is now no excuse for the farmer neglecting to keep records of the production and breeding of his herd. It is inevitable that increased competition can only be successfully met by increased production. This can chiefly be brought about by improved stock, hence the necessity of keeping records. Though the register has been arranged primarily for herds that are being tested it will be found invaluable for any dairy herd. It is plain from a glance at the explanatory notes that the system is simple and is based on practical experience. The register provides for the records of 100 cows for three years, or for from 40 to 50 cows for six years.
