A DAIRY SIDE LINE.
TURKEY REARING AT MATAMATA. Large Consignments North. A consignment of 62 turkeys to an Auckland freezing works from Matamata on Thursday led a press representative to make inquiries regarding this side line to dairying. It was found that the one noticed was one of the smaller batches sent during the past few weeks, during which time it is estimated that about 1000 turkeys have been despatched from the Matamata station. The value of the birds will of course depend on the market price of turkeys at Christmas time. However, a conservative estimate of one Matamata farmer’s cheque for turkeys despatched recently is £2OO. Among those in the Matamata district who have recently made large consignments of birds to Auckland are Messrs. R. McCabe, C. A. Stopford and W. Townshend. A Matamata farmer, questioned on the subject on Friday, said this was a side line that had been fostered for some years by a number of farmers. However, several had met with severe losses at the hands, or guns, of so-called sportsmen, and he knew of men who had now given turkey rearing up. As for himself, he said, his farm was too near the town for him to indulge in this department of farming. Taking the previous remark with the last, the reporter did not pursue the subject.
