“TOHU BOHU.”

A VARIED EVENING. Anglican Entertainment. In aid of the vicarage fund of the Putaruru Anglican Church, an entertainment under the French title, “ Tohu Bohu,” was held in the, Putaruru Town Hall on Friday evening. Unfortunately the evening proved wet and this adversely affected the attendance, and prevented some of the

artists who lived at a distance from being present. Nevertheless, a good entertainment, partaking variously of the features of a concert, a social, and a bazaar, was presented, and in fact one or two of the items alone were well worth coming a long way to hear.

Selections by the Putaruru Brass Band comprised the overture, after which community singing was held. Then followed a pianoforte duet by Misses B. Sabders and V. McKeown, orchestral selections by Miss M. Sayers (piano) and Messrs, fi. Pearse (cornet), H. Sayers (violin), and A. Brown (clarionet). The next item proved a treat of the highest order, Mrs. C. G. Alcorn, soprano, singing exquisitely the difficult solo “ The Pipes of Pan,” and an encore. More community singing preceded the interval, after which further selections by the band, orchestral items by Mrs. A. Barr Brown (piano), Mrs. M. Barnett (steel guitar), Mr. E. Henshaw (steel guitar) and Mr. Jameson (violin), and a third community sing concluded the concert programme. Altogether it g-ave much pleasure. The band selections and orchestral items were particularly tuneful and well rendered.

Dancing and supper followed, with further dancing later. Throughout two stalls at the rear of the hall had been conducted by ladies of the church, and in conjunction with these two guessing competitions were held, the winners being as follows: Turkey, Mrs. C. D. Brown; cake, Miss Stone (Te Whetu). A Dutch auction of the goods remaining on the stalls was held, and this brought the total takings for the evening to £l6 ss. The entertainment was due to the inspiration of Mr. O. Chamberlin, the local curate, and altogether was of a very happy nature, catering, as it did, for all tastes.
