THE PUTARURU PRESS.

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 18, 1924. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Office - Main Street ’Phone 28 - - P.O. Box 44 <Lewis, Portas and Dallimore’s Buildings.)

It was reported at Friday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council that Mr. Spraggs had surrendered his contract for metalling at Puketurua. The surrender was accepted. Mr. David Jones has been elected chairman and Mr. J. S. Jessop vicechairman of the New Zealand Meat Producers Board. Mr. W. Perry was reappointed acting chairman during the absence of Messrs. Jones and Jessop. The list of meetings to be addressed throughout the county by the councillors and engineer to explain the comprehensive loan proposals of the Matamata County Council is advertised in this issue. All ratepayers are urged to attend. Figures have been supplied showing that the export of apples from Nelson and Motueka for the past season amounted to 190,000 cases—accounting for 900,000 super, feet of box timber, mostly white pine from the West Coast. A request by the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce that it be advised as to the date on which the county engineer would inspect Kensington street was received at Friday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council, the chamber stating that it was desired that a deputation of its members accompany the engineer. The matter was left to the riding member and the engineer. Brief mention was made at the Matamata County Council’s meeting on Friday of a few objections to the rates for drainage work adjacent to Peria. It was stated that the position could not now be reviewed. Objection should have been made at the proper time. Once the rate list was adopted it could not be departed from. Another enjoyable dance was held in the Putaruru Town Hall on Monday evening under the auspices of the Railway Social Club. The increasing popularity of these dances was marked by a good attendance, visitors from as far afield as Matamata and Waotu being present. The music and general arrangements were up to their usual high standard and the company thoroughly enjoyed themselves. The now notorious Princes street pond, Putaruru, was referred to again at Monday evening’s meeting of the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce, anxiety being expressed that with the advent of hot weather again this still water might lead to disease. It was agreed to take an opportunity to refer the matter to the County Council representatives at the ratepayers’ meeting at Putaruru next Saturday and ask them to inspect the pond with a view to having it filled in. An application for permission to erect a private telephone line from Putaruru to serve Messrs. Douglas, Smith and McGregor (Lichfield), and Messrs. Williams, Leslie and Cole (Tokoroa) was made by Mr. Smith to Friday’s meeting of the Matamata County Council and granted, as was also an application by Mr. R. A. Ashley, Puketurua, to erect a private telephone line from his property to the Huihuitaha road. It was agreed to advise Mr. Ashley that the permission of the Power Board would also probably be necessary. “ Tohu Bohu ” —Town Hall, Friday, September 26. Bring your dancing shoes.''* Come to “ Tohu Bohu ” —Town Hall, Friday, of next week, prepared for a good community sing.* Vocal and instrumental items, guessing competition, and many other joys at “ Tohu Bohu,” September 26.* Curiosity has been aroused as to the meaning of “ Tohu Bohu.” This Is a French term and is appropriate to a novel and varied entertainment to be held in the Town Hall on Friday evening of next week, in aid of the local Vicarage Fund.
