THE UPPER WAIKATO.

SETTLEMENT AND RAILWAY. Board in Wellington. Residents’ Petition. The members of the PutaruruTaupo Railway Board went to Wellington by the express from Auckland on Sunday night. Messrs. J. Campbell and K. S. Cox, as special representatives of the Tokoroa Progress League, the Putaruru Chamber of Commerce and the settlers -on the question of Government recognition of the value of the Upper Waikato land for settlement, carried the petition on the matter that has been circulated throughout the district by the Tokoroa Progress League and very widely signed, the signature of practically every settler within the railway board’s district being obtained.

The petition is to be presented by Messrs. Campbell and Cox to the Prime Minister, and those of his colleagues concerned, when, it is anticipated, either a definite pronouncement of the Government’s attitude towards the district will be made or arrangements effected for a visit of inspection by Ministers or responsible departmental officials. The Railway Board is to confer with the Minister for Public Works, the Hon. J. G. Coates, on the momentous question of obtaining his approval to the board’s scheme for taking over the first 10 miles of the Taupo Totara Timber Co.’s railway, and thence constructing some 40 miles of new railway, observing standard grades and curves, towards Oruanui. The board has requested the Minister that the Totara Timber Co.’s representatives be specially invited to take part in the conference.
