LOW-PRICED COWS.
GIVE GOOD RETURNS. Best Ten Give Over 3401 b. Although it is invariably maintained that it is essential to pay high prices to secure animals with good butter-fat production, it has been proved by one Morrinsville farmer that low priced animals, carefully selected, are able to compare favourably as far as production goes—and it is production that counts. This particular herd was last season one of 45 cows. The highest price paid for any of these animals was £ls and only one was purchased at this figure. Three more were bought at £7, and the remainder below that amount, down to £4. The herd includes about half a dozen Ayrshires which the owner claims to be splendid milkers and cows with a good temperament.
The average yield for the herd was 2601 b of butter-fat per cow, and comparing it with the Norfolk Co-op. Dairy Co.’s average of 256Hb of fat per cow (a particularly high average) it is seen that this low priced herd has given a production well above the average. The performance is seen to be more meritorious when it is noted that the past season was the first time he had adopted herd-testing. He found that each of his ten best cows gave between 3401 b and 3601 b of fat during the season, and for low priced cattle this is considered a very creditable performance.
