The school attendance record in England has been broken at Egham, Surrey. Three children, Violet, Richard and Edwin Young, all commenced school at Egham at five years of age. Edwin, the youngest, has just reached fourteen years. All three made a perfect attendance from five to fourteen; were never absent and never late. Between them they have been at school for twenty-seven years without missing once. The fact that a woman drew one of the sections in the ballot for land at Kanakanaia has been remarked upon by a number of people, who were unaware that women were entitled to be included in a land ballot (says the Poverty Bay Herald). The explanation is that both husband and wife can have their names included, provided that the wife has had farming experience and can put up the necessary capital. This provision has at times been criticised, but the provision is a statutory one, and the Land Board has no option but to admit women with farming experience to the ballot.
The housing problem at Timaru is generally very acute, but if persons in search of homes are prepared to go to the same lengths as did two gentlemen of the leisured class, who recently visited Timaru, their problems (says the Timaru Herald) would bo solved. The two men in question, of .whom it might be said, they toiled not, neither did they spin, conceived the happy idea of selecting a dwelling near the sea, and an old 400 gallon tank, which had obviously seen better days, and had been cast away on the foreshore, was quickly converted to an up to dale residence. In these delectable surroundings, the pair lived for a month or so, until a policeman rudely broke up the happy home. It is understood that the “ bungalow ” is now on the market.
