THE PUTARURU PRESS. Office - - - Main Street ’Phone 28 - - P.O. Box 44 {Lewis, Portes and Dallimore’s Buildings.) THURSDAY, AUGUST 7, 1924. LOCAL AND GENERAL.

A girls’ basketball match between, the Tirau and Putaruru schools wasl recently played at Putaruru and was won by the home team by a substantial margin, the scores being given at 23 goals to 5. Mr. A. Stewart, a well-known Matamata business man and member of the Town Board, has purchased the old-established bakery business of Mr. J. H. Bear, Putaruru, and will conduct business there as from the beginning of September.

«And we growl about these shipping rings,” remarked Mr. J. E. Leeson at the official opening of the new factory at Motumaoho on Friday, when 'he said that while shipping freights on butter had increased from 2s 6d to 4s 6d a box, railway freights had increased from 14s 6d to 36s per ton over the same period.

At the end of last week the Morrinsville Co-op. Dairy Co. made a payout of a bonus of a Id per lb butter-fat over the .whole of the season, bringing the total payment to date up to Is s£d. It is anticipated that a further bonus of over Id will be forthcoming later on, bringing the total payment for the past season up to approximately Is 62d.

Herds totalling some 900 cows have been entered at Putaruru for testing by the New Zealand Co-op. Herdtesting Association this season. It is considered likely that one strong group with headquarters at Tirau and another with headquarters at Putaruru will be formed in lieu of the three groups of last season, viz., Tirau, Putaruru, and Puketurua, all of which were considerably below the maximum number of cows.

That women on a farm are often more valuable than men, was a remark made by Mr. R. Robertson, who was entrusted to the proposal of the toast to the ladies at the luncheon held in connection with the opening of the new dairy factory at Motumaoho. He paid a tribute to the valuable assistance the womenfolk were on a farm, and added a declaration that the man who went on to a farm without a wife was a tf mug.”

“ I am here to refer to my own company, not to criticise others,” said Mr. T. P. Dowling, chairman of the> Rotorua Co-op. Dairy Co., when addressing a dairy farmers’ meeting at Putaruru some days ago. “ However, there is one which I think I have a right to explain,” he added, and he then read a published statement by a member of the management staff of the N.Z. Co-op. Dairy Co. to the effect that the small cooperative companies and the proprietary companies were under-cutting in the sale of butter on the local market and overseas markets. Mr. Dowling intimated that at least as far as his company was concerned there was wish to undercut, but his company had found that an agreement made between it and the N.Z.C.D.C. fixing the price of butter at the factory had been violated by the latter selling the butter at that price but paying the railage to the retailer. He also read a report in which Mr. Sinclair, of the N.Z.C.D.C., had admitted that his company had sold butter in Wanganui at Is 4d per lb, when the ruling price was considerably higher.
