THE YEAR’S WORK. Manager’s Annual Report. At the meeting - of the Thames Valley Power Board last week the manager submitted his annual report as follows: LOANS. “ The ensuing year will be the first year of operations with the total loan monies borrowed and spent. “ The amount of interest and sinking fund required to be paid annually on loan monies borrowed to date is £38,334 13s 6d. “ The total amount of loans sanctioned by the ratepayers to date is £700,000, of which £150,000 has not yet been arranged for, and the amount of £38,334 13s 6d is interest and sinking fund for the £550,000 loans now being expended. SALES OF CURRENT. “ The sales of electricity for the . ear amounted to £42,391 17s Bd, dissected as follow: — “ Towns and Districts on Meter.— Lighting, £5351 14s 3d; heating and power, £5257 Is 3d; street lighting, £722 16s 7d; bulk supply, £7939 9s 6d. “ Flat Rate Charges. ESTIMATES. “My estimate for the year given in May last was £40,000, and the revenue has exceeded this by £2391 17s Sd. “ The expenditure side of the income and expenditure account totals £21,85S 5s Sd. Included in this amount is £16,095 12s 9d paid to the Public Works Department for purchase of power, and the balance, viz., £5762 12s lid, being made up in wages, salaries and general administration expenses.
“ The installation and showroom departments were carried out very satisfactorily for the year. The total nett sales in this department amounted to £38,282 7s 6d and shows a satisfactory working profit for the year. GROWTH OF REVENUE. “ The following figures will give you an indication as to the growth of the board’s revenue since its inception:—Year ended March 31, 1922, £27,057 11s Id; year ended March 31, 1923, £59,543 17s 4d; year ended March 31, 1924, £32,321‘3s 9d. “ The expenditure over the same period compares as follows:—Year ended March 31, 1922, £27,548 17s sd; year ended March 31, 1923., £47,755 15s sd; year ended March. 31,
1924, £52,557 14s sd. The figuves arc exclusive of any interest and sinking fund payments made. “On the basis of last quarter’s supply (I would like to point out that the figures I am giving are compiled from actual sales of electricity as operating on March 31, 1924) the revenue for the year ending March 31, 1925, will be as follows:—Bulk supply, £8000; flat rate, £25,032; town meters, £12,500; street lighting, £800; £46,332. “In addition to the above, there are already signed up and applications for electricity for 150 2-h.p. motors, 10 i-h.p. motors, 100 water heaters and 300 houses. These connections should be made to the mains/ before the end of the board’s year. There are also being received continuously requests for lighting and 1 power in districts already reticulated, and it should be safe to state that over 1000 motors alone will be installed and working on farms in the area before March 31, 1925. &
“ It is proposed to raise a further £4OOO by the rate to be collected from non-consumers. The total revenue for the year ending March 31, 1925, will then be estimated at £56,000. In the event of a proposition now being considered by larg*e suppliers eventuating the estimate of revenue for the year should be £60,000. It will not be necessary to collect any rate other than a non-consumers’ for this year. GENERAL. “ The area has now been practically completed as far as allocating the necessary troublemen is concerned, with the exception of a further troubleman for the Turua district upon the completion of the Waitakaruru district, and an adjustment of the Mcrrinsville troubleman if the Patetonga district is reticulated. “ The canvasser is now recanvassing the Tahuna and Patetonga districts, and his reports are very encouraging and point to this district being reticulated. Prospects for a very large industrial load in the Patetonga and Plains districts are very bright. Numerous inquiries for power for flaxmills and quarries have been received, mostly 50-h.p. loads. “ The Theriault has made four trips to Kopu during the year with poles, and the quality supplied has been excellent, only ironbark poles having been shipped. We have on several occasions during* the year had small consignments of poles at Auckland, but the storage and handling charges were very heavy in comparison with Kopu. Several hardwood poles have been found defective owing to borer and samples were forwarded to the Government biological laboratory for their examination. It was found that the borer was of the Australian variety, and a remit has been forwarded

to the Power Boards’ Conference on the matter. “ Connections to the mains were considerably hampered during the past year owing to the very bad deliveries of transformers, but orders havn already been placed for the transformers necessary to arrive before the commencement of next milking season. There are ample stocks in hand for present requirements. “ The increase in advances to consumers is now on the decrease, owing to the installations and sales now not being so large. I now expect steady reductions in this advances account during the current year. “ I wish to record my appreciation to the chairman and the board members for their favours extended to me during the year, and also to the stalf for their loyalty.”
