LOCAL AND GENERAL.

Last week’s meeting of the management committee of the Putaruru Rugby Union lapsed for want of a quorum, only four members attending and five being the minimum required to constitute a quorum.

Mr. and Mrs. A. N. Thomson, late of Cambridge, have taken up their residence at Matamata in Tainui street. Mr. Thomson intends going into business here directly premises are completed for him.

The survey for the extension of the Horahora-Arapuni power line to Rotorua is now well forward towards Mamaku. The survey party ""has of late been camped at Ngatira, whence it has been penetrating the bush along the railway line to Arahiwi.

An ex-resident of Lichfield, Mr. Thomas McClintock, died suddenly in Auckland from pneumonia some days ago. His death, following so soon on that of his brother Robert, is. rather tragic, as both were young men and had many friends in the Putaruru district.

The ladies’ division of the Putaruru Golf Club held their opening day for the season last Thursday afternoon. Some 30 ladies assembled at the links for the occasion, including a number of new members. Foursomes were played, and afternoon tea completed a successful afternoon’s outing.

The railway strike has resulted in the cessation of Messrs. Hart and Brown’s metalling work on the first 21 miles of the Putaruru-Arapuni road. Otorohanga shingle is. beingused for this length, and supplies, of course, cannot now be obtained. For the same reason the start of the Overdale metalling is delayed.

An immediate effect last week of the strike was the cancellation of the proposed visit to Putaruru on the Wednesday of Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P. for the district, he telegraphing that the cessation of the train services made it impracticable for him to carry out his intention of coming to Putaruru to spend the day here.

A gang of linemen has been at Putaruru for the Thames Valley Power Board during the past week making additional connections with the electric light system. It was at first hoped that the reticulation of Puketurua with electricity would have been completed by this winter, but the railway strike has made it impracticable to obtain the necessary poles and the prospects now of having the work completed by next spring do not appear bright.

A mob of 108 head of fat bullocks passed through Putai’uru on Friday en route to Tamahere, where they are to be held for use as required for slaughter at Horotiu to supply the Hamilton meat trade. They were fattened on the Crossing estate, Lichfield, by Mr. W. Carr Rollett, and were an exceptionally good line. It is understood that the price paid for them was a record for fat cattle in the paddock in these parts this season, representing somewhere about £IOOO.

The Glee Club gala night is arranged for Friday, May 9, at the Putaruru Town Hall, at 8 p.m., when a most attractive programme will be presented. The musical programme will include items by new artists and pianoforte solos by Mrs. Millington, who will be in Putaruru next week. The novel story-telling competition will follow and the evening will conclude with supper and dancing. Programme tickets available from active members and at all stores, 2s 6d each.*
