RAILWAY MATTERS.
CONTROL OF NOXIOUS WEEDS. Lichfield Level Crossing'. Replies have now been received by the Putaruru District Development Board to certain representations made by a deputation from the board and the Putaruru branch of the Farmers’ Union to the Hon. J. G. Coates, Minister for Railways, during- his visit to this district in December with Mr. R. McVilly, gene-ral-manager of railways, and other administrative officers of the Department. In, regard to blackberry on the railway reserve in tlie vicinity of Taumangi station, Mr. McVilly writes:— “ This matter has been looked into, and :it is found that the line gangs cut blackberry and noxious weeds atj suitable times. In order, however,! to keep the position well in hand* instructions have been given for the matter to receive particular .attention, and I trust that the steps taken will obviate any difficulty in the direction indicated by the deputation;” A further letter from Mr. R. McVilly reads: “Jn regard to the I eve!* crossing* at Lichfield road, Putaruru, I have the honour to inform you that .in 1921 the bank at the south side of the crossing was cut down, 1575 yards of earth being* shifted. The Matamata County Council agreed to keep the scrub cut, but as this work had not been done for some time the Council was recently written to and replied that the matter would he attended to. The Department has done all that can reasonably be expected to improve the crossing, and it is regretted that the installation of alarm bells cannot be agreed to.”
