DR. P»A RN A RDO’S HOM ES. Wo have to acknowledge a pleasant iiitle booklet, published in support of an appeal for contributions io “ the largest family in the world,” Dr. Barnardo’s Homes. A glance at the illustrations and letterpress shows what a great work is being accomplished by those in charge of the great institution. A total of 95,775 children have been “ lifted out of the shadow into the sun,” 7308 arc now being supported and trained and five are admitted daily. The charter of these national homes is:—“ No destitute child ever refused admission.” There is no red tape, no votes*are required, there is no waiting list—the need of the child is the only consideration. Many of these children conic from the gloom of the slums. New environment is given, healthy bodies and minds are made up and the children are trained and placed out in the Motherland and in the Dominions as healthy, honest and God-fearing citizens. Tt is claimed that these waifs become the nation’s and indeed the Empire’s greatest asset. The appeal is relied upon to maintain the great family of 7808 children during' the coming months—--1328 arc babies and little tots under five. For 10s one can have the joy of feeling that they are supportingone destitute little one for a week. Here is a typical case:--Baby Bertie was born into darkness. His father, . wounded and a prisoner at Mon?, do- ; pressed with ei.ght months of post- j war unemployment, money gone, hope I gone, every dav one long torment from a pain fed comnuiinl. every night a thing of dread, thought life under these condition-, not wor’h living, and ended it. At three ; imUhs Bertie and his mother and brr. ; |. r aged 2 : 'i were left alone. She could not tend her ha’ proper!'/ and at the same time go out to work.
