TELEPHONE SERVICES.

IMPKOY EiVIENTS AND A DDiTiONS A telegraph linesmen’s gang from Matamata has been working in Putaruru this week, running extra telephone lines along the Waotu road. The subscribers to the two pri-vately-owned party lines connected with the Lichfield exchange -have been discussing the advisability cl: connecting direct with the Putaruru exchange. It is pointed out that the present connection involves a bureau fee for every call to Putaruru, and as telephone service to Putaruru is the chief object of these systems it would be cheaper to have the connection direct, especially as only a very short length of pole line would be necessary '.o connect with the Government lines n the Lichfield road. The two party lines concerned serve the Lichfield and Wiltsdown districts, where two or three further settlers are now asking for telephone connection. A meeting of the subscribers is being held to deal with these questions. At Puketurua application has been sent in for a new party line from Putaruru to serve the settlers on the Arapuni road arfd the Huiliuitahr stream road. The application is | signed by six settlers, who trust the department will erect the line forthwith. Meanwhile, around the town also the installation of several more telephones is awaited. It is thus hoped that the gang will remain here until these works are all completed.
