MOKAI.
A FATAL ACCIDENT. A well-known and highly-respected Maori, Tuiri, was accidentally killed on December 2D while riding after cattle. Apparently his horse stumbled and threw him, for when picked up it was. found that his neck was broken and life extinct. A large tangi was held here to pay the last tribute to the memory of the dead man, and was attended by many visiting natives. Tuiri was held in high respect throughout the district and was a good friend of both pakeha and Maori. His loss will be a sad one to the local natives and his family have received many expressions of sympathy in their bereavement. AFTER THE HOLIDAYS. Work is now in full swing after the holidays, which were favoured with fine weather. Many of the local residents visited the various sights o'] Wairakei and Taupo and at the latter place both children and grown-ups thoroughly enjoyed themselves on the beach. Many picnic parties also went to the Waikato river, where enjoyable days were spent swimming* and fish - ing*. Holidays, however, are. new over, and Mokai, in common with all other places, is settling down to another year’s work.
