TIRAU.

THE WATER SUPPLY. Two letters in connection with the j Tirau water supply scheme were received at the Matamata County Council meeting on Friday-. . Mr. R. H. Bailey stated that he considered the council’s suggested charge of £ls per annum for supplying one trough on his property with water was “ very stiff.” At 'lie highest estimate of consumption it would, work out at over 3s per 1000 gallons He considered it would be worth about £8 pci- year to him. The chairman stated that Mr. Baileyhad now abandoned his intention to obtain water from the scheme and was installing- a motor of bis own to pump water. The secretary of the Auckland Education Board wrote:—“ With reference to the council’s letter of September 17 I have to state that in conformity with an undertaking of Mr. E. C. Banks, chairman of the board, to the chairman of the county council, the hoard will pay the special rate now due for water supply to the Tirau school. A cheque for the amount is enclosed. This payment, however, is not to be taken as any j recognition of liability for payment, of rate upon a special loan from which the board holds itself exempt. A demand for water rates should properly be made to the school committee, as water is a first charge against the incidental allowance to school committees. The board hopes, however, that your council will not impose a charge for water. The pupils of the school are the children of residents of Tirau. S who pav the water rate. The children I consume at the school water- which they would otherwise consume at home.” This last clause caused much merriment on the part of councillors. Tt was remarked that only about two per cent, of the children attending the Tirau school were residents of Tirau town itself. The letter was received.
