The Deputation.

We take tin- following report from the New /calami Times :

A deputation consisting of Messrs Thomas Mackay (Chairman of the Wairarapa East County Council,. I>avid Crewe i Chairman Pahiatua Rood Board). W. .lessen (Chairman Mnuricevillc Road Board I, W. \\. McCardle slid Eh Smith i members . f tlie Wairarapa East County Council'. A. Reese (Maugahao Sjx-cial Settle met it i, C. J. Richmond i Secretary Wellington Specuil Settlement No. 1 . and J. R. Morgan (Secretary Wellington Special Settlement No. 2i. who represented the various liH-al hollies in the Wairarapa District, waited up. i tlie Him E. Rilhardaou Mmi-i.r "t Public Works, and the Hon J. Ballaace. Minister for Lands, on Monday morning.

Mr Mackav, who ncte<l as s|v.kc-nian. said that tlie chief object of tin- deputation was to nsk tin- Government if they would provide a certain sum of money for tlie purple of placing the road tlirough tlie Forty-mile Busli m a state of repair. Mr Mackay pointed out to tin- Minister liovv much the Kettlement of the land in the district would he affected if tlie road were not repaired. It was quite impossible, lnsaid, for the county to put tlie road in repair, for ut present tlie ratepayers were taxed to their utmost capacity allowed by law. Mr Richardson said that when In entile into office ho was under the impression that the roads wur*- practically in the hands of the Councils, and the Government were subsiding them.

Mr Mackay said that tlie subsidy was not sufficient to keep the road in a thorough slate of repair. Mr Richardson was of opinion that tlie Waipawa and Wairarapa C unity Councils were contributing largely to the maintenance of the road. The Public Works Department, he said, were quite prepared to pay—to a reasonable and fair extent any damage done to the road by the railway.

Mr Mackay pointed out that the cost would be something like fMOOO, which would take a rale of about 2s or 2s lid. and did not see how the ratepayers could do it. He thought that if the road were kept in its present state it would greatly deter the prospects of the district. Mr Ballance said that they ought to lie thankful that the Government bad given them such a good road, and that when it vvus made they ought to have 'taken it over. He pointed out tliat the outside expenses might be met by making tolls. Mr Richmond asked if the Government would be prepared to name a iqtecific sum for the tlamage done by tlx- line, and would they make a delimit*- subsidy. Mr Richardson supposed that til. extreme damnge done was tlie carung of heavy limber on the road. Mr McCardle said that if they were going to get any money they had Ix-tter get it at once, for if they did not get it before March it would be of no use.

Mr Richard-on understood that siuce 1*77 the road* hail Ixx-n in the hands of the county, a part of the agreement la-ing that tin- Council should maint-iin port of the road, lie could s«i no reason. considering that the district was being rapidly t>. tied.

There was another matter which Mr McCanlle would like to bring lx f re Ins attention, ami that was the di-t.inee the railway had lx- u mu- •*■ .rlly taken away from the Bahi.U ia tranship. There was a very strong f-s-lnig. lie said, in the district over the Innlint being brought to the town.
