PAHIATUA V. WOODVILLE. What might he termed the opening match of the season was played on Saturday last between Paliiatua and Woodville, on the ground of the latter. It had been arranged that the match should commence aliortly after 10 o'clock, hut unfomeen circumstances prevented the whole of the Woodville men getting on the ground till after I‘2, and in order to give time f >r their putting in an appearance, Paliiatua consented to take the wickets first, substitutes being placed iu liie field for those absent on the Woodville side. The day could not l>e looked upon as very favorable for cricket, the #uu being hidden during the l>eßt part of the gatin', whilst a stiff breeze uua blowing ; however, no rain fell, and taking all tilings inttr consideration tLe match was a thoroughly cnjoyablo one, the greatest good fueling prevail mg all through. The ground, although a good pilch on malting was obtained, was rough in the field, and it was almost impossible for any of tho men to return the ball quickly ; yet it must be admitted that, had as it is, tile Woodville ground is far superior to that of Pahiatua. Owing to llie lateness of the hour of commencing, it w aimpoasiblv for the match to he plated out at 0 o'clock, the time amingtd for drawing stumps, and an understanding was come to that tho first innings should de-ide the victory, whicn, a<
