Makaretu Cash Store, PAHIATUA.
LAY SERMON NUMHER TWO. This is nut addressed to those who have taken the trouble to face the extraordinary weather of the last month, and pay a visit to the south end of the town. This is merely a mild suggestion to those who have not, that they are neglecting their own interests. Credit is tempting, and under many circumstances cash in hand is so valuable that a mail may be justified in accepting credit even if he pays more. Hut in must canes a discount for cash of even ten per cent, means that your wages are increased eleven per cent. Look at it another way. SupjKise you accept credit, and ]>ay about ten per cent. more. If you settle up in three months, you are {laying fortv per cent, per annum for the accommodation. I’crliaps it will occur to the reader that after all my prices may not be ten per cent, below others. Let me ipiote a few lines :—Strong really good watertights, 18s; superior Zeal&ndia, 17s to 10s; yellow oilskin coats, 16s; ladies' ulsters, n picked lot, at seven shillings each. Tins reads like a mistake, and perhaps some customer will look at the goods and explain. Women's boots, strong kid, last for ever in mud if dressed occasionally, guaranteed, 0s to 11s. Axes, not absolutely satisfactory, but still the best procurable in the Colony, 6s 6d. Hill-hooks, trimmers, slashers, and L. 11. shovels, 4s to ss; camp ovens, 4s to 10s.
Now I would submit that these quotations look like something more than ten i>er cent. off. lam aware that in a few' lines like currants (8d) I do not undersell others. The reason of this, as far as I know, is that grocers have a sort of agreement to sell certain things at a loss. If any merchant can sell me currants delivered in Pahiatua under Gd I shall be interested to hear from him. There is no socret about this. The price is quoted ill all commercial returns. p'ivopencefarthing in Wellington for largo parcels is a low rate. Now ifit amuses others to buy at live{)eiice-halfi>enny, pay a half]>enny carriage, and then weigh, wrap, and deliver (three months’ credit) for sevenpence, it does not amuse me. I quote currants as a type of a class of things that are always sold at bare cost.
There is another ]>oiiit I wish to mention. I have a very considerable selection of miscellaneous things, such as adzes, bolts, brackets, barrow-wheels, floor brads, barbs, clipbooks, chairs, down pipe, s]>outiug, enamelled ware, funnels, gale latches, lunges, irons, locks, lamps, mattocks, mousetrups, ovens, car]>enteni' tools, wall paper, blind rollers, blind holland, sash fasteners and sash weights, doors, windows, oilcloth, carpet, scissors la splendid line, not " fancy”), spikes, tin tacks (quarter inch for blind rollers,) tea trays, turpentine, varnish, zinc, hematite, brush ware, scrim, saddles, door mats, &c., selected with care, and all priced low. 11l nine eases out of ten, if you find my price ns high us any other local establishment, there is a mistake somewhere; and I do not think the mistake is often on my side. Still, mistakes do occur, and will always occur, and I shall always be glad to make the fullest enquiry in any case, however small the amount may be. 1 have had enough experience of cash trading to feel certain that a large business can be done here in the course of a year or two, and I am advertising in this prominent way because the sooner my place becomes properly known, the sooner I shall ascertain precisely what local requirements «re, and so feel justified in largely supplementing my stock. I am, 4tc., W. F. HOWLETT.
