THE SAN FRANCISCO MAIL SERVICE.
We understand that the agent of tho New Zealand (ioTwrnment at .\m Francisco. Mr Cluirles R. lliickiund. has sent a column meat ion to tho PtMtinasur-Geiieml, Sir Julius \" g *l. pointing out how the service cati lashortened. The matter is of very great importance, and will no doubt receive immoliate attention. It appear* that since the mail contract has been in the hands of the Union S. S. Company, tl • mail* are invariably delivered in 'Frisco ahead of tune, usually arriving there on Sunday, sometimes on a Saturday, though not due till Monday. The mail is usually forwarded from 'Frisco on the Sunday afternoon, and reaches New Y’ork tlie following Saturday en late to catch the fa*l Cunarrier. which leaves New York every .Saturday morning. The mail ha* in consequence to lie at New Y'ork till the following Tuesday and Wedm-ilay, and goes to England by a boat which takes from one to two days I nge*-in crossing the Atlantic than the fast Cunarrier*. In tins way fn>mtlir*- to six days are lost. To enable the mail to catch the Cunarrier at New Y’ork on the Saturday, and thus quicken its transit by some days, it is simply necessary that the mail *hou!d U< despatched from Auckland on a Monday instead of Tuesday a* at prv * nt, and from Sydney on a VVerim**d*v. It might cause hu.-ines* |«*>p|. m Auckland Rome inconvenienc* having to get tlieir mail matter off on a Monday morning, but -oeii-.g the great saving of time to lv gamed it* .m portanre must outweigh any other objections. Alterations will also hate to tie made in tha days of tlie steamer* leaving San Francisco, at' a- to < liable the mail to take a 1 vantage of the shortening of tlie time in the railway transit acroos the American Continent. The time has las.ii reduced from *u days to fire, and a further red icti ui of 4} day* is oon lem plan led, thank* to the demand* and the eompetitu i of rival line-, notably tlie Canadian-Pacific, ju*t opened. b the colonial mail* have arrived in Sin FVanciaco 46 hour* U-t. :« tl.. contract •ailing Uine of the staaniar, and now tlie railway lime haa keen reduced. the uiaiß will arnv. |«* hours la-fore the *Uannr leave*, unlr aeWUS alteration ia made. Hy a r arrange mem of the *aih ig dele* < f tie U. iil hteenier from San Francis,- ~ Auckland and Sydney, it s**iu po**il !• to shorten the outward linn I v two .lavs, and tlie homeward by tlirv* to six —• Auckland Herald.
