VILLAGE SETTLEMENTS.
(TO THE EDITOR.) Sir,—The fset of the Pahiatu* Village Settlement living the first experiment of the kind is a valid reason for de\ ling s little space to the w ay it has hitherto been managod. Within a few months a numbor of similar settlements will be started, and it is very desirable that any le- is to be learnt from the one at our ow n doors should not be passed over. Your readers will remember that plans of the Settlement were circulated ; and here the first mistake may be noticed. The plans did not show where the place was. It is true they showed it on the east side of the main road ; they did not show its distance north or south from any well known landmark, such as the Man galaitioka Bridge. Hence passers-by, travellers, swaggers, and visitors of all kinds, bail a great deal of extra trouble in finding out exactly where the land was. One road is like another. Who ran identify “ cross road” or “ short road" on the spot ? Temporary sign boards would obviate tins. Also, liie plan should not show roads that do not exist. Tile Man garamaraina road, fur instance, is shown on the plan, but is not felled, so that anyone looking for it is apt to get ou another one and go tmlea astray, (suppose, however, that bv diligent enquiry a would.be settler hss found the made, be has great trouble to find sections.
