EVENTIDE.

Twilight. I love you, when eventide's minstrels Trooiangroino forth a melodious throng. With their mirth and their sodne*-. - a curious medley. Of (alley and legend, of love and --f » mg. To charm me, and lull me, in lethargic cadence. And lift me up gunlly, and take me along. Vos, lake ms along to inqsMsiblc far lands— Away from this life to some region of rest. Say thereto yon landscape, all golden and imtrile. That fills with its glory tho sky of the west; To wander its borders, a stranger unheeded— And calm in its silence the wsr* in my breast. The twilight is fading, I’m watching it vanish— Flying o'er clued bank and mountain of suow. By castles of giants, and strongholds of Pixies, Farther, and fainter, and lessor, till lo! Swoop after swoop, the darkness de aconding Hides the last sheen of its splendour and glow. The sigh of the night-wind, the chill of the night-wind. Has stealthily crept in and tangled mv hair, And whispered, “ Awake, sir, return from your slumbers. Your impossible fancies, and castles of air." And I rise from that trance with a love for the painter. The Artist of artists, who pictured them there. Yes, I rise from that trance with a love for my brothers— My weary and heart-aching brothers of toil. With a wish that they too could have fancied my fancies, And rested with mo from life's carking turmoil. Have tasted with tne of those lethcal waters, And in fancy have eaten the fruits of that sou. Encamped in a forest, dense, stubborn, and tow'ring, Mocking the pigmies that ply at their base— Stroke alter stroke then, cheerily, brother*. Heed not the sweat nor the grime on your face. Look to the future, yon hewers and shapers, Of homes fertile coining—a prosperous race. B. Pahiatua.
