AN EVIL.

(TO THE EDITOR.) Sir, —Considering the disgraceful scenes of drunkenness now dally and nightly to be seen in this township, I think it is high time we had a constable stationed here. No less than four cases of drunkenness on the main road come under my observation last week. Once upon a time our wives and sisters could walk down to the Post Office in the evening in safely, but no lady is safe from insult on our streets after dark now. When going to the post one night last week, I was myself obliged to leave the road to avoid collision with two inebriates. Yesterday (Sunday) we had the edifying sight of a party of intoxicated roadmen wending their erratic way homewards. and those men, Mr Editor, had to cross the river (where it runs very deep and swift) on a narrow log. I would suggest that " someone" (whoever is most responsible for their state) should "always" see the men safely over that log, or you may have a fatal accident to chronicle before long. I trust that our members of the Licensing Committee will kept their eyes open, and make a note of what they may see.—l am, &c., Watchful. Pahiatua, July 19th. 1886.
