An interesting return lias lieen prepared by Kir Julius Vogel for circulation at the Indian and Colonial Exhibilou. The paper shows the total value of imports ami exports, amount of Customs revenue collected, and number and tonnage of vessels entered inwards ami cleared outwards from the foundation of the Colony in 1841 to 1885. A few figures will give an idea of the New Zealand rate of progress. In 1841 the total value of our imports was £155,568, exports £17,717, customs revenue £BO7B. Ten years later 1 1851 1 the value of our imports had increased to £819,540, with a corresponding increase in the value of exports to £849,540, customs revenue £49,130. In 1861 the figures were—import* £2,498,811 (an increase of over 2 millions i, exports £1,870,247. customs revenue £260,868. In 1871 the value of imports hud reached £4,078,198, exports £5,202,084 lan increase of nearly fonr millions in that decade), customs revenue £781.888. lu 1881 imp0rt5£7,457.045, exports £6,060,866, customs revenue £1,621,609. in IHHS the imports were £7,479,921. exports £6,819,989, ami the customs revenue £1,428,809. In 1871 tlie value of exports topped the value of imports by over a million, though there is a falling off of over half a million in 1885.
