NEW SOCIETY FAD.

Evanston, 111., Women Spend Summer in Nature Study. Wood* In the Vicinity Are Scoured lor Specimens of All Kinds of Insect* and Mnacams Are Started in 11oiucb> Bugs, toads, beetles, butterflies and all kinds of insects are fleeing in terror from society women on the shore of Lake Michigan in the vicinity of Evanston, 111. For the nature study fad has seized the exclusive set and the woods are being scoured for specimens. In the underbrush along the lake smartly clad women are prying, armed with microscopes and cyanide jars, on ihe lookout for insects. The fad started recently and reached its climax when the “Back Lot” society was formed that u;e studies might be pursued systematically. So far 57 women have signified their intention of joining the society. They live in Evanston and the towns north of there. Lrof. John H. Gray, of Northwestern university, has taken over the society and joined it with his infant class, winch was organized some time ago, and will be instructed by Miss Harriett Lehmann. It is not a perfunctory study of nature that has been undertaken by the clubv. omen. They are going into the movement in earnest. The opening days saw i stampede to book stores for scientific publications and instruments for the capture and care of the specimens, and when the supply ran out more were ordered. In addition to this museums are being built in private residences, where collections are being stored. “You see, this is more profitable than billing time at a summer resort,” Mrs. Gilson said, “It is really quite instructive and entertaining at the same time. There is quite as much pleasure In chasing a butterfly with a net as In playing golf.”
