HIGH COMMISSIONER’S REPORT,
The Department of Industries and Commerce have received the following cable from the High Commissioner, dated London, 23rd instant
The mutton market is slightly weaker, with less demand; supplies are increasing, but there is a scarcity of prime quality ; Canterbury mutton is quoted at 4cl per lb, and North Island brands 3£d, Tho lamb market is dull, and stocks on hand are heavy; the demand is expected to increase; the average price of Canterbury lamb is 5d per lb, and other than Canterbury brand 4fd per lb. The beef market is dull, and the supply exceeds the demand; the average price is Bfd and 2|d per lb for hind and fore quarters respectively. The butter market is steady, and prices are well maintained for choicest quality, owing to the short supply; the market is dull for second-class quality, as the supply exceeds demand; current quotations are—choicest New Zealand 101 s, Argentine 100 s, Victorian 995, Danish Ills per cwfc. The cheese market is quiet, and prices are slightly weaker, with less demand, at 65s per cwt. The hemp market is rather unsettled, prices are slightly weaker; good fair grade, on spot, is quoted at £37 per ton, April-June shipments £36, and fair current Manila, on spot, £39 per ton.
