Labour Matters.
PAREORA TROUBLE ENDED. Timaru, March 26. The trouble at the Pareora Freezing Works is now at an end, Thirty-six butchers are operating there to-day, and an additional ten are expected to start in a day or two. A few oi those who struck did not start again, but the Company obtained men from other centres to fill their places, SCARCITY OF WORKERS. Gisborne, March 2G. The shortage of casual labour is causing some difficulty in loading steamers, The Shaw-Savill steamer lonic was delayed in consequence on Saturday, and a quantity of cargo which came to hand by last week's boats has not yet been discharged. Invercargill, March 2G. The sawmill hands who went out on strike at the Southland Sawmilling Company's mill deny that they struck. They gave 24 hours' notice as required by the Arbitration Court award, but were put on again for three days and then told to stop work. Fresh hands have been engaged and the Company will not re-employ the men, Wellington, March 26.
The Wellington Meat Export Company are making an important concession to their workmen engaged in the freezing chambers, In order that the men may go about their work with more comfort than has been the case in the past the Company have decided to supply them with -strong denim overalls, waterproof mittens, and long overall boots, the legs being of canvas and the sole of several thicknesses of felt sewn between canvas. Formerly the men used to wrap pieces of sacking round their boots.
