Whitcombe and Tombs’ Difficulty.
The trades and labour organisations have been holding meetings in the different centres over the difficulty with the . above firm, and at Christchurch over three thousand were present. If matters are carried to extremes it will no doubt be a very serious affair, and will involve many thousands of men, and paralyze the business of the, country for some time. We thiuk, however, Whitcombe and Tombs will allow wiser counsels to prevail; and not persist in their present obstinate refusal to allow, the question to be settled by arbitration. ’ It' is estimated that there are 40,000 men now in New Zealand belonging to a union of some kind, and they all appear determined, and very rightly, not to allow the abcjre firm to defy them. They, are bound to do this in the interests of those firms which are paying union wages, and it would not be fair of wise to allow Whitcombe and Tombs to undersell, by employing cheap labour, those firms which have readily fell in with and adopted union principles. The union men have only to take a firm stand and keep shoulder to shoulder and nothing can prevent them gaining the day.
