Pelorus Road Board.
A meeting of the above Board was held on Wednesday. Present: Messrs Davies (in the chair), A. W. Dillon, J. Brownlee, J. Duncan, and T. Looms.
The minutes of the previous meeting were read and confirmed.
The outward correspondence having been read, letters were read from— The Mines Department stating that there were no funds at the disposal of the Department to enable them to make a dray road between Mahakipawa and Havelock.
The Surveyor-General that the application for a bridge over Alfred Creek was under consideration, and if funds permitted it was probable the bridge would be erected.
R. Frater re pipes. C. H. Turner re road to Waikakaho. J. W. Taylor asking that the sum of £lO per annum be voted to him in addition to the driving fees for his services as Ranger. The Surveyor-General stating that no record could be found of any promise to construct a dray road from Mahakipawa to Havelock and that as there was good water carriage the road was unnecessary and would be little used, and that there were no funds available for the work.
Spring Creek Road Board asking that settlers in their district might be allowed three horses to their drays in carting firewood, posts, &c., from the .Kaituna, On the motion of the Chairman it was resolved that the Board do now strike a rate of three farthings in the £ upon the values of the rateable properties as appearing on the valuation roll now in force for the period of one year, from the first day of April, 1890 to the thirtieth day of March, 1891, payable in one sum at the office of the Board, Havelock, on the 14th July. 1890. An application was received from Messrs Brownlee and Co. for license to construct a tramway on or across the roads in the Pelorus, subdivision. After examining the plan deposited it was decided to take the matter into consideration at the next meeting of the Board on 6th April. Applications to mine under various parts of the road at Cullensville were received from Messrs G, H. Grattan, Dumpy and Co., Johnson and Waddy, The Mahakipawa Alluvial Goldmining Company, Oliver and party, British Empire Goldmining Company, Alice Fell Goldmining Company. As none of the plans submitted agreed with each other, consideration of the applications was adjourned till next meeting of the Board to enable the secretary to ascertain the true position of each claim*
An application was received from the Golden Bar Goldmining Company for leave to cross the road in the Wakamarina with a water-race. Permission was granted on consideration that a deposit be made to the Board to cover any damage caused thereby. And to put the road in repair when the race ceased to be used.
W. Kennington and Co made application for leave to put a tramway across the road in the Kaituna Valley. Permission was granted subject to the work being done to the Board’s satisfaction, and that a guarantee should be given that the tram should be taken up when ceased to be used, and the road put in proper state of repair. The secretary was instructed to inform Mr Taylor that the Board could not pay a salary to the Ranger in addition to the driving fees. It was resolved that the Minister of Mines and the Surveyor-General be written to, stating that the road to Mahakipawa was a necessity, and that it would be used as much as any road in the district when made.
The secretary was directed to inform the Spring Creek Road Board that this Board could not grant the concessions asked for.
