Sheep in the Waikato have increased during 12 months by 50,000, the number now being 215,000. The local railway servants have taken up the cause of operative bakers. NAPIER, June 80. Heavy rains during the past week have caused a large part of the plains to be under water, It was from two to four feet deep in the township of Olive and surrounding country, but in the night the rivers burst their banks and the water is subsiding. GEEYMOUTH. June 80. The coal export for the past week was 8,500 tons. WESTPORT. June 80. The coal export for the week which ended on Saturday last was 5069 tons. WELLINGTON. July 1. Mr Sullivan, the amateur sculling champion of New Zealand, was presented with a purse of sovereigns. He left for Auckland this morning, en route for Sydney, where he enters the shed of Neil Matterson. At a lecture delivered by A. D. Riley, manager of the School of Design, on industrial education, the Minister of Education presided. A resolution was moved urging the Minister of Education to establish a scheme of industrial education for the colony, in order that our artisans may not be behind those of other colonies or even the mother country. The Customs revenue collected in the Colony in June was £102,769, as compared with £127,165 for the pregious month and £98,647 for June 1889. Last month Auckland contributed £24,006, Wellington £16,687, Lyttelton and Christchurch £14,252, Dunedin £27,428; total Customs revenue for last quarter £356,208. The beer revenue last month was £3BBO, for the previous month £4400, and for June, 1889, £8376. Last month Auckland paid £822, Wellington £438, Christchurch £862, Dunedin £944; total beer duty for quarter £12897. In the Supreme Court before the Chief Justice and a special juryr Wii-
liam Hansen, a boy of 14, sued (through his father) W. Plunkett Cole, late master of the Te Aro School, for £605 damages for breaking his thumb with a cane in March last year. The defence is that only moderate and sufficidfl chastisement was inflicted. The care will last all day.
