What is the Reason?
This is what Mr, Goschen has to say on the subject of the increase in the drink traffic during the past financial year in England:—“Nearly two and a half millions out of a surplus of three and a fourth millions were due to an -absolutely extraordinary circumstance The two-and a half millions excess of revenue have been due to au extraordinary rush to alcohol, and to au operation in silver which was not contsmplated when I presented ray Budget last year. I now wish to call the particular attention of the Committee to the fact that the increase ih the consumption of alcohol has augmented the receipts from alcohobc beverages by a sum exceeding £1,800.000. Let me remind the Commuee that for 11 years the revenue from spirits had been de-> dining, and for two years it had remained stationary. Now, if I had come before the House and said 1 believed there would be an increase iu :he consumption of alcoholic beverages in the year which would bring in J61,80 ! ,(M0 more, I should have been c -usidered either a lunatic or a libeller of the consuming classes of this country..
