Public Meeting.

A public meeting of settlers in the Bounds was held in the house of Mr L. Borck on Saturday last'. Mr F. C. Pell occupied the chair, and the following settlers were present; - Messrs John Gould, P. 0. Pell, H. C. Maude, Bertrand Maude, Thomas Gould, A. W. H.-Walker, Roland Maude, Waite? Borck, Thomas Clifford, Harrington Walker, Lauritz Borck, and W. T. Erskine.

It was resolved unanimously, Thai this meeting fully recognise the imperative necessity of an outlet being provided for settlers in the Sounds other than' by water, and that the member for the district be requested to again bring before the Minister for Lands the urgent necessity that the track from Nydia Bay to the Rai Valley be made at once, as the settlers are heavily handicapped through being unable to drive their stock to a market. The track was promised over a year ago, arid nothing has been done .yet. That this meeting is fully of opinion that the opening of an outlet would not only be a great advantage to the present settlers, but would also greatly stimulate the settlement and prosperity of the whole district.

That in the opinion of this meeting the settlers of this end of the Sounds are entitled to a mail service, as well as others, and that the hardship of having to pull from twelve to twenty miles in an open boat to post or receive a letter should cease. That a copy of these resolutions be sent to the member for the district, asking him to use his utmost endeavours to get a mail service granted, and that a petition be sent to the Postmaster-General, asking him to establish a post-office at the house of Mr L. Borck, junior, Pipi Beach, near Maori Bay, with a weekly service of letters from Havelock, which can be done at a cost not exceeding £4O per annum.

Two petitions were drawn up, and were signed by those present,—-one asking for a track to be made from Nydia Bay to Rai Valley, and the other for a mail service. The petitions will be forwarded through the member for this district to the respective departments.
