PAINTING OF THE CHURCH.
TO THE EDITOR. Sir,—l read, with regret, in your last issue' a letter signed “H. A. Jones.” A question has always two sides, and it as well that the public should know both. The facts are ; A bazaar was got up in aid of the church funds, whereby £44 was raised, and it was decided to call for tenders for shingling, repairing, and painting the church in two separate contracts : one for - shingling and repairing, and the other for. painting. Only two .tenders were received for carpenter’s work, Mr Hayden’s and Mr Jones’, Mr Hayden’s being the lowest was accepted. Mr Hayden’s contract for carpenter’s work was £2llßs, of which nearly £2O was absorbed in the roof, 1 leaving the small balance for repairs. ■ Mr Hayden signed the specifications • on January 5, and finished’ his contract in the early part of February. The architect then passed Mr Hayden s L work, and the Vestry were very well * pleased with the satisfactory way in 1 which it was done, and seemed to ! think he had done enough for the money he was to receive, i Three tenders were received for 1 painting, Mr Jones being the success- ; ful one. He then signed his contract ■ for painting, and according to the ■ specification was to start work at ■ once, whereas he allowed six weeks to . elapse, and the Vestry, exasperated at the delay, and fearing that he would 1 not finish by Saturday next’, passed . the resolution, which he quotes in his letter. 1 X could say more but I think I have } said enough to leave your readers to 3 judge. Apologising for occupying so much of jour'valuable ispace.—l am, &C., ■ '-'i Not a Vestryman. : March'-28. 3 . TO THE EDITOR. | 3 Sxr ) —ln your issue, of the 2,Bth inst. ** is a letter signed by “H. A. Jones,l’ j in which he endeavours to throw dis--3 credit upon some one, else, without in t any way bettering his own case. For 1 the information of all those interested 5 in church matters I may state that the t only money available for the repairs of 1 which he complains, was the very large 3 sum of two ipounds; and all that could 3 be done for this amount was done by 3 me to the entire satisfaction of those 1 who employed me (can Mr Jones say ‘ the saipe as regards his contract ?), 3 and did not in any way prevent the ■ work of painting being Proceeded with. > In verification of this I fhay 'mention 1 that I was authorised by the vestry to ■ go on with the painting, owing to Mr 3 Jones’ delay,, some two weeks prior to > the date on which he started, but I did > not wish to deprive, him of a job. : I f ■ I am, &ci, | ' George Hayden. | J Havelock, 31st March, 1890.
