BROAD TIRES.

TO THE EDITOR. £ Sir,— l wish to point out to you ; that a portion of the main road was ■ metalled twenty-one years ago, and to • my knowledge there has been nothing done to it since, although the heavy timber and grain waggons and all ; other traffic has been travelling oyer _ it ever since, thus proving that when a j road is properly metalled there is no occasion for broad tires. I think that if the money that has been spent on”! broad tires had been spent in good ; metal it would be more creditable to ; those men with “ fads; ” but better still if they had used their spare , energy in hammering ,at the Government to ■ get our main road done according to the vote that was placed on the estimates when Bir John Hall was Premier—viz., 17ft feet formation, . 12ft river metal, 12in deep, tapering off 18in, and giving 15ft base, instead of 10 and 12ft of formation as ni . present. As for good metal somF parts of the road has not seen it yet. While I m at it, Mr Editor, let me say a word about representation. I think instead of having 70 members at £2lO a year, it would be better to have 100 at a less screw, and then you would be better represented, because members would have less ground to travel over and each member would know the local wants.—l am, &c., G. H. Watson.
