A SUBSTITUTE.
Mr John Barns (writes a corresponipoadent of the Melbourne Argus) goffered a sad but temporary shock to Ms vanity the other day. Ever since ;the great dock strike the town has been placarded with an announcement that a jportrait model of John Burns, the .great Socialist leader, is to be seen at Madame TaasaadV Waxwork Exhibition. John Burn’s himself, being attracted by the advertisement, went to Madame Tnssaud’s and asked to be shown himself. When he saw himself he was perfectly shocked, ‘W 11, I never knew I looked such a ruffian as Jill that/ he exclaimed plaintively, and a depressed mood, he wan/Mered into the chamber of horrors ■ inquiring for the portrait of Lipski, the East End murderer, who, after all, he thbnght, must look worse than he did, '■‘tJorry, sir,’ replied the attendant, ‘ he's jiot op. his pedestal to day. You must rCOtne back next week.’ ‘Gone to be ,minded? ’ inquired Burns. ‘ Not exactly/ was the answer, ‘ but the gnv’uor was in a ’urry to meet the public demand to see John Hums, so ■we rigged up Lipaki in the sailor suit and Straw hat, and you’ll find him outride.’ ‘Thank you, I’ve seen hup,’ gaid Burns; ‘in fact, I’m Burns.’
