STRANGE DISCOVERY IN CEYLON..
A curious discovery is reported from Ceylon. In the interior of the island is the Sigiri rock fortress, one of the most extraordinary natural fortresses in the world. It is so inaccessible now that only one European had bethis year ascended it, and he had to use climbing ladders to ascend and to cross the chasms. Recently a member of the Ceylon Civil Service followed the example of General Lennox—-the < gentleman who was the first to &ss£d/ —and during his investigations of chambers and passages cut in the solid ' rock he came to a half-size painting on the under side of a huge overhanging rock. This he copied while lying on his back under it, the work taking a whole fortnight. The picture contains • thirteen female figures in three-quarter , length life size, beautifully coloured , and° very fresh. They were' painted , 1,800 years ago by the order of a king named Kasyapa, who lives in Cingalese history as the murderer of his father, and who took refuge in the fastnesses , of Sigiri from the vengeance of his brothers.
