(Per Press Association.) Wellington, February 7. By the last three direct steamers heavy exports of butter were sent home, One merchant alone despatched 5350 packages each from to 80lbs. All came from the WairarapTJ| and Taranaki. February 8. Mr Morpeth, an athlete from Wellington on a trip to the Lakes, has broken two records by ascending and descending Ben Lomond in three hours three minutes, and by climbing to within 200 feet of the summit of Mount Earnslaw. There are heavy busb. fires in the Northern Wairarapa, and near Eketahuna traffic in some plrces is impeded. The somewhat unusual sight of a Native Land Court in full swing is to be seen here just now, The land under review is the Ngarara block at Waihanae, 30,000 acres, The proceedings are expected to cover a month.

To-day Lord Onslow left in the Lizard for a trip to Waiwera and other places of interest in the Hauraki Gulf. It is stated that His Excellency the Governor is negotiating for the hire of the yacht Maritana for cruising in the Wiatemata and in Hauraka. Dunedin, February 7. A young woman named Maude Brooker, alias Hamilton, attempted to commit suicide to-night by jumping off the Rattray street wharf just as the steamer Beautiful Star was leaving. A man named M'Kewen managed to fish her out none the worse. New Plymouth, February 7. . A private letter, received by Mr Samuel, M.H.R., by the ’Frisco mail states that shares in the Taranaki Petroleum Company are all allotted, and arrangements are made for a bor-. mg plant to be sent on from America as soon as possible. It is also stated in connection with iron sand that Edison’s new invention overcomes the refractory nature of the metal. Gisborne, February 7, An old man named J. H. Topping has been arrested for arson. He was evicted from a shop in which he had carried on business, and last night he was found standing watching, the premises on fire. He was remanded.
