The Government have under consideration a plan for making each department audit its own revenue under the supervision of audit, with the Auditor-General as chairman of audit, railway bills to be left to that department. Several changes arc to be made also in the Treasury in the way of dispensing with unnecessary accounts.’

The Government have received by cable from the Agent-General the alterations proposed by the Imperial authorities in regard to the Federation Enabling Bill, the most important one being that of empowering the legislature of any colony to withdraw its colony from the operation of the Act. The new civil service regulations are to be issued in a few days to more strictly enforce the regular attendance to official duties during office hours. Rewi has addresecd a letter to Mr. Ballance stating the natives will assist Mr. Ro.chfort in the survey of the main trunk railway line, will remove any difficulties that may arise, and wi'l offer no ods»ruction to the construction of the railway.

Government have decided to reinstate to their former positions as third-class inspectors six of the sub.inspectors who were reduced to sergeant-majors by the late Government's retrenchment scheme, but the scale of pay will continue as at present, provision being made next sessioe for increase.
