> The following is the remainder of the busi- » ness transacted at the the County Council j yesterday afternoon :— Finance Committee's Report. Cr. Ferris read the report drawn up by the Finance Committee at a meeting held that morning (which was published yesterday) and stated with regard to the proposed arrange- ; ment with the Bank, that since the meeting ' they had seen the manager of the Rank, who told them that he could not give interest on the credit balances, as the Bank had entered into an arrangement precluding them from so doing. Cr, Chambers moved the adoption of the report. Cr. Trimmer seconded. Carried. Engineer's Report. The Engineer’s report was then read as published, and considered. Makaraka Artesian Well, Cr. Ferris proposed that the work as recommended by the Engineer be undertaken as it was essentially necessary for a large number of the ratepayers to keep the well going. Cr. Chambers said that Mr. Beresford had offered to him to pay half the cost of the work if the Council would give him 12 months to pay it in. He would move that the offer be accepted. Cr. Wallace seconded. The Engineer was authorised to get the offer in writing and then have the work curried out. Pakirikiri Ferry. Cr. Chambers proposed that the Pakirikiri ferry be suspended from the first of January next to the first of June. The Oweta Road was then in very good repair and could carry traffic very well. If Mr. Heeny, the ferry, man, was willing to carry on the ferry for that time on the fees he got, and bound himself to keep the punt in good repair, he would be agreeable to allow it to run on. The latter suggestion was agreed to. Other Works. The various works as recommended to be proceeded with in the Engineer’s report were passed. B aikohu Road. It was agreed that steps be taken to have a certain portion of the Waikohu Road near Scott's Bridge, proclaimed a main road. Tologa Bay. Cr. Gannon directed the attention of the Council to certain necessary works requiring to be done between Tologa Bay and Gisborne.
*An improvement in the road near the • Tapuwae rooks, and also the rooks near Whangara. need something being done. The ► approachee to the Tologa Bay punt should be put in order. Fonnunent approaches could M made tor a comparatively small amount, the metal being obtainable from Cook's Cove. L The Council authorised the Engineer to tproceed with the works asked for, Vb Kaiparu Road. 1 The Engineer was instructed to bring up a ► report on the Kaiparu road leading to the E Pipiwaka Road. p The Engineer stated that he would report Lon the Pipiwaka road at a future meeting. EL Maintenance Men, On the suggestion of Cr. Ferris the Engineer was instructed to take a note of I having maintenance men in order to keep the ’"roads in good repair.
Dor/ Callan. The tenders for the supply of 600 dog eollars were received and opened. It was decided as they were so high to call for fresh tenders, substituting Colonial leather for English, which was too expensive.
