[Per United Press Association.] Auckland, December 5. Porter’s Wool Scouring Company is to be wound up. It has a debit balance of £526. Wanganui, December 5. At a largely attended meeting last night respecting the opening up of the upper portion of the Wanganui river by steam communication, a committee was formed to inquire as to the probable cost of a suitable steamer, and wait upon Mr. Ballance to ask him what support the project was likely to receive from Government. Reefton, December 5. The Resident Magistrate decided yesterday that the action of the returning officers in the County election for Crushington, Murray, and Reefton ridings, in refusing to take the votes tendered by virtue of miners’ rights, was irregular, and the elections are therefore void. Full costs were allowed the petitioners in each case, Timaru, December o. Mr. Wakefield having resigned the editorship of the Timaru Herald, he has been succeeded by Mr. W. H. Triggs, formerly of the Wellington Pont. Dunedin, December 5. It was stated in last night’s Herald that it was the intention of the Government to place charitable institutions in all parts of the Colony on the system of pound for pound, Government going one pound for each pound raised locally. The two men arrested in connection with the fatal assault on a shanty keeper, named Meldrum, were brought before the justices at Outram yeeterday, and remanded till Saturday, when it is expected the inquest will take place. The first medical examination in connection with the Otago University took place last Saturday and Monday, when William Christie passed. He is the first medical student who has passed a professional examination in the Colony.
