COOK COUNTY COUNCIL.

A special meeting of the Cook County Council was held this afternoon. Present Cr. Sunderland (Chairman), Gannon, Gray, Chambers, Trimmer, Wallace, Smith, Ferris and Montmollin. The minutes of last meeting were read and confirmed. Deputation. On the motion of Cr. Ferris the standing orders were suspended in order to hear the cuuip aint of a native woman, named Atareta Kuru, an objector to the road passing through her property at Ruangarehu. She said she had no objection to the road going to i certain point along the bank of the river, which property she possessed, but after that .he objected to it. Cr. Chambers proposed that Atareta Bara >e informed that they regretted putting her •n any inconvenience, but they would have to ake the road as proposed in order to study he convenience of, the public, and that they •ould not make the deviation as suggested by ler, as the ground was by far too swampy. This was agreed on, and the deputation -vas dismissed. TPctimata Hoad. Mr. Tutohen waited on the Council as a deputation from the Waimata Road Board, in order to urge upon the Cou oil the necessity of proclaiming a main Cou ity road hrough the Waimn a district. ' Cr. Gannan proposed “ That the Council take over the road from the biidge to where it comes out at the Quvry road,” Cr. Wallace seconded.

The Chairman ruled that as the matter was so important it could not be further considered unti l it should be brought on by notice of motion. Cr. Gannon then withdrew his motion of which he said he would give due notice. Engineer's Report. The Engineer reported as follows:—The seveial works in hand are being satisfactorily performed. Tne artesian well at Makaraka has not been flowing for the past six weeks. I am unab e to account for it, other than the pipe being corroded and cnoaed with sand. Before a permanent flow can be ensured it will be necessary to put a smaller pipe inside the present one. As the water is a great convenience to the public, (‘specially diiring the summer months, I would recommend that something be done in

the ma'ter. Tht? Pakirikiri ferry is at present being worked at a cost of £1 per week, and I have arranged with Mr. Heeney to continue the service until the end of the year. I would ask your Council to consider how they will have it worked in future. I would recommend that the folloving works be undertaken, and that tenders be called for same as soon as possible. 1. Gravelling road from Town boundary to Makaraka 20 cubic yards per chain. 2. Filling depots on Main road with gravel. 3. Repairing road over Kaiteratahi Hill, and improving and gravelling cuttings to Kaiteratahi Ford. 4. Draining, forming and gravelling roid from Scott’s Bridge to Cutting, 40 chains. 5. Draining and f irming road to bush, 40 chains, and repairing gravelled portion. 6. Forming and gravelling 2 miles of road to the Karaka gate. 7. Additions to Ormond river bank protection works.
