Wellington News.
[Own Correspondent.] Wellington, November 21. During a visit of inspection to the Mount View Asylum, the Colonial Secretary had an interview with the girl Fanny Boddington, recently tried at Blenheim for the murder of her infant child, but acquitted on the ground of insanity, and ordered to be confined during the Colonial Secretary’s pleasure. Dr. Grabham reported that though the girl was rather silly she presented no evidence of insanity, and it is understood that when his final report regarding her is received she will be released. Strong suspicion is entertained that the forged notes recently circulated on the Christchurch racecourse were specimens of Wellington art and industry, and it is rumored that some arrests made last week on charges of vagrancy are not entirely unconnected with the affair.
A deputation of manufacturers in the Wellington District, waited on the Colonial Treasurer yesterday, regarding the Industrial Exhibition to be held in Wellington next, year. Sir Julius Vogel thanked the deputation for having sought an interview, and explained at great length the intentions of of Government. He stated it was contemplated the exhibition next year should be the first of a series, and would be confined with some few exceptions to colonial manufacturers and produce. Most of the classes if not all would have attached to them a badge of merit in the shape of a gold medal, to which would attach a privilege enabling a son or daughter, nephew or niece, to be awarded a scholarship with a right to secondary education for eight years. Government would be careful not to conflict, with the , various agricultural exhibitions throughout the colony, and hoped Agricultural Societies would see their way to assist Government in securing the success of these exhibitions.
The Property Tax first moiety is payable on December 22nd, and the second on February 2nd.
