Cftiterbury Metropolitan Meeting. [Own Correspondent.] Christchurch, November 12. The first day’s races of the Canterbury Metropolitan Meeting was held yesterday. The weather was showery, and the course extremely heavy in consequence of the rain which fell on Monday last. The following are the results :— Handicap Hurdle Race, once round and a distance. Borderman .. .. ..1 The Lad 2 Faust 3 Time : 3 mins. 30 secs. Free Handicap, one mile. Mata 1 Pearl .. •. .. .. 2 Sir Bedevere 3 Time: 1 min. 50 secs. New Zealand Cup, 2 miles. Hon. W. Robinson’ Vanguard .. 1 Captain Bussell’s Leonora .. 2 G. Stead’s Ike • • 3 After a number of false starts the lot were despatched on pretty even terms, Turquoise and Tim Whiffler in the van, and Nelson bringing up the rear. Passing the stand Tim Whiffler led, Turquoise being next, and Lady Evelyn third, the others well up, and Leodogran last. At the back of the course

Turquoise had displaced Tim Whiffler, and shortly afterwards Vanguard took third place, The Poet running fourth, and Leonora also well up. Rounding the corner Tim Whiffler gave way to Vanguard, who shortly afterwards passed Turquoise and led into the straight. Leonora then came on with a rush and got second place. The pace down the straight was evidently too fast for the remainder of the field, and Vanguard and Leonora ran away from all the others, except Ike, who came on well towards the finish. Vanguard passed the post an easy winner, fully three lengths in advance of Leonora, who beat Ike by about seven lengths for second place. The others were not ridden oat. Time : 3 mins. 492 secs. Welcome Stakes, 4 furlongs. Stoncyhurst .. .. .. 1 Hermitage 2 Wizard 3 Time : 53 secs. Riccarton Welter Handicap, 6 furlongs. Mata 1 Billy 2 Polly 3 Time : 1 min. 20| secs. Scratch Selling Race. Ploughboy 1
