Auckland News.

[Own Correspondent.] Auckland, November 11. Woodyear’s Circus will visit Auckland about the 18th inst. Yesterday being the Prince of Wales’ birthday, business was generally suspended throughout the City. Old and young both turned out to enjoy the national holiday. Amongst many places of popular resort the Domain was largely patronized. Cricket matches, picnic parties, and the regular turn out of volunteers was celebrated at Ellerslie, and passed off satisfactorily. The attendance at the Cattle Show was not so good as on Saturday, no doubt ow’ing to the inclement weather.

The Whau annual regatta passed off with eclat.

Within the harbor yesterday all was bustle and gaiety. Different coasting steamers left the wharf at 10 o’clock loaded with pleasure seekers, some for Waiwera, others for Kawau, while some proceeded to Motutapu. Throughout the day a number of sailing and pulling boats all filled, fully bent on pleasure, were to be seen dotted over the harbor in all directions. The Opera House was crowded to excess last evening to witness Miss Crawford’s Dramatie company perform “ London by Night.” The fifth anniversary of the Auckland United Bricklayers’ Society was celebrated last evening in the Choral Hall. The R.M.S. Zealandia arrived in harbor early this morning from Sydney. Great dissatisfaction is expressed by the residents of Auckland at the management of the railway authorities yesterday. The volunteers returning from Ellerslie h-d to be huddled together in cattle trucks, while trains comparatively empty passed on to Auckland without picking them up. Enquiries wore instituted on Friday by His Worship the Mayor into the cause of discontent brought forward by an inmate of the Whau Asylum, which resulted in the charges brought forward being found to be without foundation.
